We’ve all heard the bad news about journalism. The audience is fragmenting. The business model is outdated. The secure jobs are evaporating. But dig a bit deeper and you’ll see what we see: Innovation, creativity, commitment and resilience.

Journalists in Transition is a 501c3 corporation dedicated to supporting our colleagues and ourselves as we take the next step in our careers. Hundreds of media jobs have disappeared in South Florida in recent years, but the familiar faces and names that guided our communities through hurricanes, elections, pandemics, crimes and capers are as eager to serve our communities as ever. Some of us will continue to serve in journalism’s dynamic marketplace, others will migrate to other fields.

We are taking many paths to our future. Some are going back to school, using our journalism skills to become better school teachers, lawyers, social workers and business leaders. Others are launching news-based businesses focused on the topics and communities we love. Many of us are setting up home offices, working as freelancers and communications professionals. Some are launching off in adventures never before contemplated.

What we have in common is a desire to translate the skills that made us excellent journalists into the jobs of the future. Taking that next step requires support and investment. We’re organizing seminars and networking meetings so that we can learn from and be inspired by each other. But more than that, we’re seeking grants. Launching the news businesses and educational efforts of the future requires an investment.

Please join us in making sure that the people who have brought you the news will continue serving your communities in new and creative ways.
